Grok Goes Free with Limits
X tests free access to its AI chatbot Grok, offering limited queries to boost user feedback and compete with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
X (formerly Twitter) is now testing free access to its AI chatbot, Grok, after initially reserving it for premium users. Over the weekend, app researchers and users in select regions, including New Zealand, reported seeing the free version of Grok available. This was later confirmed by TechCrunch.
To use the free version, users must have an account at least seven days old and linked to a phone number. However, there are usage limits in place: users can make up to 10 queries every two hours with the Grok-2 model, 20 queries with Grok-2 mini, and three image analysis requests per day.

Grok-2, which launched in August, includes image generation capabilities powered by Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 model and has recently gained image comprehension abilities.
What You Need to Know:
The free access is being tested with specific usage limits.
Accounts must be at least a week old and phone-verified.
This expansion aims to grow xAI’s user base and accelerate feedback, helping Grok better compete with AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
The move could signal xAI's effort to attract more users and speed up product improvement, especially as it seeks funding with a valuation target of $40 billion, as reported last month by The Wall Street Journal.
Grok might be free for now, but with its usage caps, don’t expect unlimited chatting just yet!
